That function is useful for one reason:

Users need to use stable kernels, but forget about them. The time past and the kernel package has been removed from the official package repository, and after time also from the system. Some files remain then at /boot and /etc/mkinitcpio.d/ and cannot be removed automatically, but only by hand.

Therefore this function could do this on request automatically.
