Summary

mhwd is not able to auto-install video-nvidia for my Nvidia RTX A4000 card. It does not show it as an available driver nor does the auto-install feature work. "Boot with proprietary drivers (non-free)" from the Manjaro live-CD also does not work.

Problem

I have a Nvidia RTX A4000 card.

I am having issues with successfully booting into Manjaro live CD with option "Boot with proprietary drivers (non-free)". It boots, but does not load the Nvidia drivers and reverts to VGA mode. If I pick the "Boot with open-source drivers (free)", it will successfully boot and I can install. However, after install, mhwd does not show any Nvidia drivers are available for my card.

Diagnosis

I tracked this down to the fact that /var/lib/mhwd/ids/pci/nvidia.ids does not contain the A4000 PCI device ID 0x24b0 so mhwd is unable to able to determine what drivers are compatible with my graphics card.

This device ID exists in the NVIDIA /usr/share/doc/nvidia/README:

A1. CURRENT NVIDIA GPUS
NVIDIA GPU product Device PCI ID* VDPAU features
 ------------------------------------------------------- -------------- --------------
...
 NVIDIA RTX A4000 24B0 1028 14AD K
 NVIDIA RTX A4000 24B0 103C 14AD K
 NVIDIA RTX A4000 24B0 10DE 14AD K
 NVIDIA RTX A4000 24B0 17AA 14AD K
...

NOTE

* If three IDs are listed, the first is the PCI Device ID, the second is the
PCI Subsystem Vendor ID, and the third is the PCI Subsystem Device ID.

After some digging the mhwd-nvidia bash script in this repo uses sed to extract the device IDs from the README or an object file from nvidia driver payload (DKMS?). extra/nvidia-utils/PKGBUILD uses this script to provide the nvidia.ids file. My bash and regex skills aren't great so I am lost here but this seems like the culprit to me. I think the lines in the README that have 3 fields (PCI Device ID, PCI Subsys Vendor ID, PCI Subsys Device ID) are being skipped! Note that a lot of them have just a single field.

If this is true, then there are lots of cards that are being ignored.

Workaround

On an installed system (with open-source drivers) append 24b0 to /var/lib/mhwd/ids/pci/nvidia.ids. Run mhwd and it should work.

Hey @Hunter522 Can you test with my ISO?
this will detect anything. Can you confirm my theory? :)
